Lawn Mower Maintenance

[ad_left]

To have a nice lawn, you have to mow it periodically. If you use a walk behind mower, there are some things you need to do each season to take care of it. Otherwise, you can damage your lawn when you mow.

Each spring when it is time to start mowing, replace the sparkplug and blade on the mower. You can often get kits with everything you need for the yearly maintenance in them. Hopefully, you drained the oil and gasoline out of the tanks before putting your mower up for the season. If not, you need to do that now. Stale gasoline and oil can damage the motor and make it really hard to get it started.

The need for a spark plug is obvious. They wear out. People often do not think of replacing the mower blade, however. A dull blade tears instead of cleanly shears. The tears are harder for the plant to close up and heal. This leaves an opening for diseases to enter the plant. Make sure the output area of the mower works correctly. Does the grass or mulch come out of get gummed up under the mower? Remove any dried grass from this area as that makes it harder for the mower to eject the grass it is cutting.

In the fall or winter, when you are through with the mower for the season, you should empty the oil and gasoline from it before storing it. The oil gets sludgy when it sits and does not circulate for a long time and the gasoline gers stale. Neither thing is healthy for the mower. Make sure you dispose of the gas and oil responsibly, by taking them to an oil change place or other approved disposal site.

Following these steps will improve your mower’s performance and extend its’ life. It will also help keep your lawn healthy. Remember, always disconnect the spark plug on the mower when working on it for safety.
