Not all soils are conducive to healthy plant growth. When starting out a new lawn, you need to find good topsoil that is ideal for growing a beautiful lawn. All it takes is a little extra background research.
First, find a reputable topsoil supplier in your area. Ask your friends and neighbors for recommendations. You can also try your local nurseries or garden centers. The internet and the yellow pages can also provide you with listings of topsoil suppliers. But don't select a supplier based on an email or a phone conversation only. Visit all your potential suppliers to check the quality of their soil.
It also helps to do a little research on where their topsoil came from. It shouldn't come from areas that are weed or disease infested. If your supplier says that they mix the topsoil themselves, ask them what the composition is. Also, avoid soils that were exposed to toxic chemicals. Your topsoil should also be pure and free from debris. Its texture shouldn't be too rocky or sandy, and it shouldn't be compacted like modeling clay either. It should look like healthy, loose soil.

If you're planning on using the topsoil on a garden with existing topsoil, make sure that your new soil has the same texture as your original soil. But if your existing topsoil is already bad or has carried disease-ridden plants, consult a professional landscaper before buying new topsoil.
Order just enough topsoil to cover your lawn to a depth of 3 to 6 inches. Measure the area of your lawn and ask your supplier how much topsoil is needed to cover it. Usually, 3 cubic yards can cover a 1000 square foot lawn to a depth of 1 inch.
