To truly practice the Japanese art of making a Bonsai tree, it takes time and patience. Bonsai is a method used to produce miniaturized versions of full-sized plants, bushes or trees, through confinement of roots and constant pruning of new growth. However it is possible to instantly make a Bonsai tree, without the time-consuming process.
The first thing is to select the type of tree you wish to grow, using Bonsai techniques. It can be something that comes as a shrub, including boxwoods, azaleas or juniper and yews. Selecting a 1-gallon planter from your local nursery is the easiest way to transform a shrub into an instant Bonsai tree.
Before you remove the shrub from the nursery container, remove extra growth and start shaping your Bonsai, using pruners. Once you have removed branches from the base of the trunk and around the central trunk area, you will see the shape of your miniature tree start to form.
The next step will be to trim the roots by one-third their length. Removing the nursery container and soaking the root ball in a bucket of water will help you remove the soil. Be careful not to trim the center tap root by more than an inch, but you should be able to take a couple of inches off the remaining root system.
Preparing your Bonsai planter or planting tray should involve a shallow container, with drainage holes. You can place a piece of window screen in the bottom of the container and cover with an inch of potting soil mix. You will need to spread the roots over the surface of the soil base and then, cover with soil to within an inch of the rim. This will allow you to place aquarium gravel over the top and still leaves room for watering.

Once you have planted your instant Bonsai tree, you can finish pruning foliage and additional branches. Carefully shape the plant in a formation that resembles the artistically pleasing appearance you hope to end up with. Consider a sweeping or cascading shape, or even twisting and bending branches with loosely wound floral wire will further accentuate your tree’s basic shape, after trimming.
You will immediately start with an instant Bonsai tree that takes little time or patience. You will need to regularly prune larger leaves, branches, new growth and annually trim the roots. Also occasionally watering and feeding fertilizer or fish emulsion is very good for healthier bonsai trees.
