Longhua Nursery, founded in 1954 in Shanghai accepts students who want to learn classical theory and all aspects of art penjing. Everything can be learned by students in architecture there in 10 years. In the early 1960s, in China there are at least 60 other forms of penjing local specialties that can be distinguished by eye experts.
Some of these forms are from at least the 16th century. In the midst of the chaos of the Cultural Revolution, a collection of penjing in Mainland China, especially in Beijing and surrounding areas were destroyed. After their Penjing or Penzaiwork was destroyed, some experts in penjing, some of which included a man in his sixties were sent to the countryside to plant rice. However, in several cities in southern and eastern China, a number penjing were collected in a safe place.
With Mr. Yat Fei Liu, Wu Yee-sun (1905-2005), third generation penjing teacher and grandson of the founder of the Lingnan mahzab, penjing’s first exhibition took place in Hong Kong in 1968. Penjing displayed a collection of aristocratic penjing rescued from the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949 brought out of the way of the Chinese mainland and stored in a safe place.
Two editions of a book by Yee-sun Wu written in Chinese and English, Man Lung Garden Artistic Pot Plants (Plant Pot Man Lung Garden Artistic) revived public interest for Chinese art formerly known as the Western people bonsai.
In the year 1978 an exhibition was held by Penzai Yuk Sui Yuen in Canton. The exhibition was the first exhibition open to the public after the last exhibition 10 years earlier.
Around 250 penjing private collectors exhibited antique pots at public parks. Shanghai Botanical Garden has a permanent exhibition of 3,000 pieces of penjing also inaugurated in that year. Penjing’s First National Exhibition was held in 1979 in Beijing, showing more than 1,100 specimens from 13 provinces, cities and autonomous regions.
A division of Hangzhou Flower Nursery in 1981 specialized in penjing. They maintain more than 1,500 specimens that had long been neglected.

Penjing eventually became popular again in China thanks to the stable and economic conditions of the people. Besides Shanghai, growth occurred mainly in coastal provinces such as Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Guangdong. A collection of public and private property is increasing. Private collections can range from hundreds to several thousand pieces of penjing.
Clay dolls or other decoration are commonly used in the composition to show scale or theme. The Flower Association and the Chinese Penjing established late in 1981 gave birth after 7 years to the Penjing Chinese Artists Association.
At first, this collection on display was in a temporary location on Campus Shaw, and then transferred to a permanent location near the gate of Ho Sin Hang Campus on Thurs Shing Road, Hong Kong
